Introduction
|
|
Wireless network access at Victoria University will allow you to
connect to the University's network from wireless hotspots within the University using a laptop. The
service is available to all staff and students of Victoria University. |
|
About the VicUni Wireless Network |
|
VicUni is an upgrade to the
Victoria University's legacy (VU) wireless network. It uses encryption to
safeguard data transferred across the wireless network, and
authentication to ensure only people with a valid Victoria
University username and password can access the wireless network.
Once your machine is configured to use it you effectively have
network connectivity wherever you see a wireless zone.
VicUni does not require a VPN connection. Authentication occurs
immediately once a connection is made to the wireless network,
allowing you to use Victoria University's network resources (e.g.
connecting to server storage areas such as your home directory or
shared work areas, or access to the Internet) without additional steps. For further information about the
network, visit the
ITS Wireless
page (Available on Campus Only). |

Requirements |
|
The VicUni wireless network requires no special software
(for example, VPN) for you to connect. All you need to do is:
- Have a computer that has:
- an appropriate wireless card installed and enabled
- been correctly configured
to connect to a wireless network
- A valid Active Directory login
and password.
- Students: this is created
once you are fully enrolled
- Staff: if you do not already have
access (i.e. you are a new staff member), you should complete
an Application for Network &
E-mail Access form and forward it to IT Services
- Complete the appropriate set-up
procedure for your laptop (see next section)
You will only ever need to set up and log into VicUni once! After the initial set-up, whenever you switch your laptop on in a wireless coverage area you
will be automatically connected to the
VicUni network and can start using the Internet
immediately. |

effectively have network connectivity wherever you see a
wireless zone. |

Security
|
|
Victoria University is aware of the security risks and we have adopted an integrated protection
approach. The department of Information Technology Services (ITS) is responsible for setting out and maintaining strict standards for the use of wireless devices.
These guidelines outline the responsibilities of staff and students using wireless network access. The focus is on safeguarding wireless communications to ensure confidentiality, integrity, authentication, and availability of
data.
These guidelines will be reviewed periodically to reflect the changing need for wireless security.
