Access Problems Troubleshooting
Outlined below are a number of procedures and settings which we recommend when experiencing problems with internet access.
Hardware & Software Requirements

Library recommendation of minimum hardware & software:

*Some specific databases are designed for Internet Explorer.  We recommend the use of the latest version of any browser for use with databases.  Online videos require the setting up of a a DRM (Digital Rights Management) license only possible on the later versions of Internet Explorer (7.0+).

Off Campus Username & Passwords
Browser Settings - Internet Explorer 7 and 8
General Settings
  • Select Tools from the main menu
  • Select Internet Options... from the drop-down menu
  • Click on the General tab
  • The General screen will appear.

  • Click on the Delete... button in the Browsing History section - the Delete Browsing History screen will appear.

  • Tick the Temporary Internet files box.
  • Click on the Delete button.
  • The Browsing History will then be deleted and you will return to the General screen.
  • Click on the Settings button - the Settings screen will appear.

  • Ensure that Check for newer versions of stored pages: is set to Automatically.
  • Click on the OK button.
  • Click on the OK button.
Security Settings
  • Select Tools from the main menu
  • Select Internet Options... from the drop-down menu
  • Click on the Security tab
  • If not already selected, click on the Default Level button in the Security level for this zone section menu - ensure that the section selected is the Internet.

  • The Security level for this zone will appear.  Ensure it is set to Medium.  Use the slider to change the setting if required.

  • Click on the OK button.
Privacy Settings
  • Select Tools from the main menu
  • Select Internet Options... from the drop-down menu
  • Click on the Privacy tab
  • The Privacy screen will appear.  Ensure that the Settings are set to Medium.  Use the slider to change the setting if required.

  • Also ensure in the Pop-up Blocker section that Turn on Pop-up Blocker is NOT selected.  This can impair the operation of some databases.
  • Click on the Advanced... button - the Advanced Privacy Settings screen will appear.
  • Ensure that the Override automatic cookie handling tick box is NOT selected.

  • Click on the OK button.
  • Click on the OK button.
Advanced Settings
  • Select Tools from the main menu
  • Select Internet Options... from the drop-down menu
  • Click on the Advanced tab
  • The Advanced Settings screen will appear.

  • Scroll down to the Security section at the bottom of the list.
  • Ensure that both Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 are ticked.
  • Untick the Warn about certificate address mismatch*.
  • Click on the OK button.
Pop-up Blocker
A number of databases require the use of active pop-ups, therefore pop-ups must not be blocked.
  • Select Tools from the main menu.
  • Select Pop-up Blocker from the drop-down menu.

  • If the pop-up blocker is on, select Turn Off Pop-up Blocker

  • Once the blocker is turned off, you will see the following:

Compatibility View Settings (Internet Explorer 8+ Only)
Some web pages will not display properly (missing or blocked sections of the screen) if the Compatibility View is not set to all web sites.
  • Select Tools from the main menu.
  • Select Compatibility View Settings from the drop-down menu.

  • The Compatibility View Settings pop-up will appear
  • Select the Display all websites in Compatibility View tick box

  • Click on the button to finish.
Browser Settings - Internet Explorer 6
General Settings
  • Select Tools from the main menu
  • Select Internet Options... from the drop-down menu
  • Click on the General tab
  • The General screen will appear.

  • Click on the Delete Files... button - the Delete Files screen will appear.

  • Tick the Delete All offline content box.
  • Click on the OK button.
  • Click on the Settings... button - the Settings screen will appear.

  • Ensure that Check for newer versions of stored pages: is set to Automatically.
  • Click on the OK button.
  • Click on the Clear History button - and click on the Yes button.
  • Click on the OK button.
Security Settings
  • Select Tools from the main menu
  • Select Internet Options... from the drop-down menu
  • Click on the Security tab
  • If not already selected, click on the Default Level button in the Security level for this zone section menu - ensure that the section selected is the Internet.

  • The Security level for this zone will appear.  Ensure it is set to Medium.  Use the slider to change the setting if required.

  • Click on the OK button.
Privacy Settings
  • Select Tools from the main menu
  • Select Internet Options... from the drop-down menu
  • Click on the Privacy tab
  • The Privacy screen will appear.  Ensure that the Settings are set to Medium.  Use the slider to change the setting if required.

  • Also ensure that Block pop-ups is NOT selected.  This can impair the operation of some databases.

Pop-up Blocker

General Settings
  • Select Tools from the main menu.
  • Select Options... from the drop-down menu.
  • Click on the Privacy button.
  • Click on the History tab.
  • The History screen will appear.

  • Click on the Clear Browsing History Now button.
  • Click on the Cookies tab -  - the Cookies screen will appear.

  • Ensure that there is a tick in both the Allow sites to set cookies and for the originating site only tick boxes
  • Click on the Cache tab - the Cache screen will appear.

  • Click on the Clear Cache Now button.
  • Click on the OK button.
Content Settings
  • Select Tools from the main menu
  • Select Options... from the drop-down menu
  • Click on the Content button.
  • The Content screen will appear.

  • Ensure that Block Popup Windows is NOT ticked.
  • Ensure Enable Java< and Enable JavaScript are ticked.
  • Click on the OK button.
Advanced Settings
  • Select Tools from the main menu
  • Select Options... from the drop-down menu
  • Click on the Advanced button.
  • Click on the Security tab.
  • The Advanced screen will appear.

  • Ensure that both Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 are ticked.
  • Click on the OK button.
Browser Settings - Mozilla Firefox (Version 3)
General Settings
  • Select Tools from the main menu.
  • Select Options... from the drop-down menu.
  • The Options screen will appear.
  • Click on the Privacy button.

  • In the Cookies section, ensure that there is a tick in both the Accept cookies from sites and Accept third-party cookies tick boxes
  • In the Keep until: drop-down box, select they expire.
  • In the Private Data section at the bottom, click on the Clear Now... button.
  • The Clear Private Data pop-up will appear.

  • Ensure that there is a tick in both the Browsing History, Cache and Authenticated Sessions tick boxes.
  • Click on the Clear Private Data Now button.
  • This will return you to the main Options screen.
  • Click on the OK button.
Content Settings
  • Select Tools from the main menu
  • Select Options... from the drop-down menu
  • Click on the Content button.
  • The Content screen will appear.

  • Ensure that Block popup windows is NOT ticked.
  • Ensure Enable JavaScript and Enable Java are ticked.
  • Click on the OK button.
Advanced Settings
  • Select Tools from the main menu
  • Select Options... from the drop-down menu
  • Click on the Advanced button.
  • Click on the Encryption tab.
  • The Encryption screen will appear.

  • Ensure that both Use SSL 3.0 and Use TLS 1.0 are ticked.
  • Click on the OK button.
