Mobile Resources and QR Codes

What is a QR Code?
A QR Code that links to the mobile Catalogue when scanned.

A QR Code is a two-dimensional barcode that is used to encode a link that can be quickly read by your Smart Phone with a QR Code reader. You've probably seen QR Codes in newspapers, magazines,  catalogues, on signs, buses and in shops.

We've started using QR Codes at the Library as a way for you to quickly link to information or resources with your Smart Phone. QR Codes will help you access Library mobile resources such as PC and Room Availabilities/Bookings, searching the Library Catalogue, and accessing eJournal platforms such as EBSCO.

If you don't have a QR Code reading app, don't worry there are many free ones available from your preferred app-store/market place.

QR Codes in the Library also come with a shortened link (e.g. bit.ly/vu001) as an alternative to the QR Code. It is the same thing - an easy to use link straight to resources or information via your Smart Phone.

Getting Started

To get started with using QR Codes you need to ensure to have the following:

  • A Smartphone (e.g. iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Blackberry, etc)
  • Camera and Wi-Fi (Wireless) capability - a Smartphone generally comes with both of these - please ensure these work on your phone
  • Connect to the VicUni Wi-Fi Network to avoid any data charges
  • QR Code Application. Some Smartphones come pre-installed with a QR Code reader. If your Smartphone doesn't have it pre-installed you can download a free QR Code reader from the Smartphone's app-store / marketplace (An App-Store or Marketplace is an Application on the Smartphone where you can download from and install additional applications to your phone. Below are some free QR Codes application names listed that you can search for in your Smartphone's App-Store/Marketplace, download and install.
