Linking to Articles in ScienceDirect

1.  Connect to the Database
  • From the Library Home page, click on the EJournals by Title button.
  • The Electronic Journal Search page will appear.
  • Using the Search for E-Journals by Title field, search for the journal in which the article was published.
  • A list of matching titles, collection holdings and databases on which they are contained will appear.
  • Find the matching journal title and click on the link to an appropriate database – this procedure assumes that you have chosen the ScienceDirect database (if not please refer to the corresponding procedure).
  • You will enter the database and go directly to the holdings for the selected journal.
2.  Search the Journal
  • If you already know the publication date of the article, then scroll down and click the corresponding date to display the contents.

  • If you already know the publication date of the article, then click the corresponding volume number to display the list of issues, then select the matching issue. If the issue/year is unknown:
    1. Type the keywords from the article title into the Quick Search: field, and click on the Go button.

3. Select an Article
  • A list of articles will appear.

4. Copy the URL
  • Right-click on the Full Text + Links link for the article and select Copy Shortcut.

5. In a HTML/Web Editor
  • Open the web page in an HTML editor (FrontPage, Dreamweaver) where you intend to place the link to the selected article.

  • Type in the text you will use as your link.

6.  Select Link Text
  • Select your link text by highlighting it with your mouse cursor.

7. Insert Hyperlink
  • Go to Insert (in FrontPage) or Insert in (Netscape Composer)

  • Select Hyperlink (FrontPage) or Link (Netscape)

  • Ctrl-V to paste in the URL you copied (at step 4 above) into the Address box.

8. Text to Display
  • In the Text to Display: box, type in the text that you want displayed on the web page which links to the URL in the Address box.

9. Link Completed
  • The direct link to the article is now complete.
