Australasian Legal Information Institute
The Australasian Legal Information Institute (AustLII) provides free internet access to Australasian legal materials.  AustLII's broad public policy agenda is to improve access to justice through better access to information.  To that end, we have become one of the largest sources of legal materials on the net, with over 20 gigabytes of raw text materials and over 4 million searchable documents.
Building Code of Australia
Online access to the Building Code of Australia. The BCA contains technical provisions for the design and construction of buildings and other structures, covering such matters as structure, fire resistance, access and egress, services and equipment, and certain aspects of health and amenity.
Consumer Affairs Victoria
Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) protects and promotes the interests of consumers.

To do this we:

  • review and advise Government on consumer legislation and industry codes
  • advise and education consumers, tenants, traders and landlords on their rights, responsibilities and changes to the law
  • register and license businesses and occupations
  • conciliate disputes between consumers and traders, tenants and landlords
  • enforce and ensure compliance with consumer laws.
Housing Industry Association
HIA is the largest building industry association in Australia supporting the businesses and interests of builders, contractors, manufacturers and business partners in the industry.

Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal
VCAT was created on 1 July 1998 and amalgamated 15 boards and tribunals to offer a one stop shop dealing with a range of disputes, providing Victorians with access to civil justice system which is modern, accessible, efficient and cost effective.

VCAT deals with disputes about:

  • purchase and supply of goods
  • credit
  • discrimination
  • domestic building works
  • guardianship and administration
  • disability services
  • legal profession services
  • residential tenancies
  • retail tenancies

VCAT also deals with disputes between people and government (State/Local) in areas such as:

  • land valuation
  • licences to carry on businesses (Including travel agents, motor car traders and others)
  • planning and environment
  • State taxation
  • many other government decisions (such as Transport Accident Commission decisions and freedom of information issues).

The Australian Institute of Building Surveyors (AIBS) is recognised nationally and internationally as the peak professional body representing Building Surveyors in Australia.
Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors
The Australian Institute of Quality Surveyors (AIQS) is the regulatory body of the profession.  Through its leadership, standards and code of ethics, it ensures that practising Quality Surveyors are dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of professional excellence.

Australian Steel Institute
ASI is Australia's peak steel industry association promoting the use of Australian steel in manufacturing and construction.
Building Commission
The Building Commission is a statutory authority that oversees the building control system in Victoria.  We ensure the safety, liveability and sustainability of our built environment.

The Commission does this by brining vision, innovation and leadership to the Victorian building industry.  We oversee building legislation, regulate building practices, advise Government, and provide services to industry and consumers.

Department of Transport (Formerly: Department of Infrastructure)
On 30 April 2008, the Department of Infrastructure became the Department of Transport to provide a stronger focus on the delivery of transport improvements. We support the Minister for Public Transport and the Minister for Roads and Ports.

WorkSafe Victoria
WorkSafe Victoria is the manager of Victoria's workplace safety system.

Broadly, the responsibilities of WorkSafe are to:

  • help avoid workplace injuries occurring
  • enforce Victoria's occupational health & safety laws
  • provide reasonably priced workplace injury insurance for employers
  • help injured workers back into the workforce
  • manage the workers' compensation scheme by ensuring the prompt delivery of appropriate services and adopting prudent financial practices.

Standards Australia
Standards Australia was established in 1922 and is recognised through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Commonwealth Government as the peak non-government standards development body in Australia. Use internet explorer to access AS Online.
The library has a subscription to the full text of all Australian Standards online. You can search, view and print standards in pdf format. This does not include HB (Handbooks) or International Standards; these publications must be purchased.

The Library has one concurrent user license so it is important to search and browse at the first address and then log into the library database page to download or print full text. When you have finished searching please remember to log out, as it is only possible for one user to use the Standards at a time.
