Legal Encyclopedias
Legal encyclopaedias provide comprehensive coverage of statute and case law.
Legal encyclopaedias are very useful as a starting point for research. There are two major loose-leaf legal encyclopaedias on Australian law, The Laws of Australia (Via LBC Online only) and Halsbury's Laws of Australia. (available in print at Footscray Park Campus and the Queen Street Law Library ) and online via Lexis Nexis AU.

Halsbury's Laws of Australia:
Halsbury's Laws covers every subject area and all nine jurisdictions. It is intended as a work of first reference to aid the researcher at this level.
Volumes 1-28 are 'text volumes' .Each contains one or more titles arranged alphabetically.
Volume 29 & 30 are reference volumes.
v29 contains the consolidated index, v30 contains the consolidated tables of cases and statutes.
The information is arranged according to paragraph numbers. These appear in square brackets. The
first number in an index reference, is the number given to the title, the number after the dash is the
paragraph number, for example: [5-1820]

5 = Aboriginals
1820 = non-compliance with guidelines

The encyclopaedia is updated by Australian Current Law-Reporter. The 'Halsbury's Updating
Table' in the Reporter cumulates, so check in the latest issue.

The Laws of Australia:
This publication consists of:
Main title volumes: each title will have its own Table of _parent, Table of Cases, Table of
Legislation and Index. Each title is updated when required.
Like Halsbury's, the paragraphs are numbered with square brackets. The number in bold indicates
the title number, the number after the colon is the paragraph number.

Loose-leaf Services  CCH/LexisNexis Butterworth's
To ensure that the legal researcher has the most up to date information, publishers such as Lexis Nexis/Butterworth's and CCH, produce many of their publications in loose-leaf format.
These texts are in binders and as the law changes, the old outdated pages are removed and newly updated pages are inserted at regular intervals, according to a set of filing instructions. As these publications are up-to-date, they are usually a good starting point for research.
Subject areas that are covered include immigration, EEO, administrative law, taxation, local government, criminal law, contract, family law, labour law, and evidence.

Victoria University Library has many of these publications in print & online . Check the library catalogue.
