I am having a lot of trouble locating any of my subjects esential readings on e-reserve, every time I type either the name of the lecturer, the subject name and code or the name of the book I need, I get a lot of irrelevant lists. Am i doing this wrong? I have no idea how to access any of my readings and have only been told to go the library website...

Suggestion

I always thought that libraries were meant to be quiet environments, however it seems that many students do not share this view. [ more ] Whilst the silent areas at my two most frequented venues (St Albans and City Flinders) do have silent areas, neither of them have computers for use.

I am constantly asking students to keep it down, and/or for them to take their phone call elsewhere as people are trying to work here. I have also been thanked for taking my call away from the work area when I wish to make a call.

I would like the library to do one of the following

a) start posting more signs about the expectations in these environments b) Ask IT to place computers in these areas for students to work in c) start policing a little more, for it generally carries more weight if it comes from a staff member[less]person

Response

Thank you for your email regarding your noise concerns at both City Flinders and St Albans Learning Commons. Both Campus Librarians have responded to the issues raised and their responses follow.

While the Library encourages a social study environment it also acknowledges the need to provide a variety of spaces including quiet and silent study facilities. If you are finding it difficult to study because of noisy students, please let Library staff know so action can be taken at the time.

City Flinders: It is acknowledged that some students get very noisy in the City Flinders Learning Commons, especially in the group study and PC zone. Although there signs in the areas designated as quiet study areas, given the small floor space here on level 15, regrettably noise does travel. However, during peak periods of the academic year (eg: leading up to and including the examination periods) the whole of the City Flinders Learning Commons will be designated a quiet study area and will monitored accordingly.

St Albans: There are changes underway to provide both silent study areas with and without PC access. Room 7.201p on Level 2 has 18 PCs and will be signposted as Silent Study. Rooms 7.101a and 7.101b are currently being refurbished as a Silent Study facility with accompanying soundproofing and double glazing as the result of a successful Minor Works proposal. It is anticipated that these initiatives will improve the study environment within the St Albans Learning Commons.

Suggestion

Hi, I'm a PhD (Research) student at City campus and I have problem of getting economic and financial data of my home country (Malaysia). Our current library database (Mintglobal and Factiva)cannot provide me with some basic economic data like for eg. historical daily or monthly of exchange rates, treasury bills and interest rates data say from 1997-2008. Also when I need historical stock prices of companies in overseas stock exchanges over a long period of years. As far as I am concern, this problem is not only concerned to me but also to some other international PhD students who are writing their thesis in economics and finance related area. May I suggest our library to subscribe to this database called Global Financial Data and its detail features and reasonable pricing are available at https://www.globalfinancialdata.com/. T

Thank you in advance for your prompt reply.

Response

Dear PhD student

You have a very specific information need and I understand the Librarians have already been assisting you on this and that the historical and other information is neither in VU's subscribed databases nor freely available on the web

Suggestion

Dear Librarian,

Thanks for notifying me that I was incorrect filling the "ILL" form to request collection for our library.

Honestly, I have never informed about web/form "Suggest an Item for the Collection" but it was only "Document Supply" when I followed training for PhD held by VU library to get resources that are not available in our library. or maybe I missed the section of "Suggest an Item for the Collection" in the training because it gives so many information so I forgot this section.

Anyhow, I suggest in the future, the training for PhD students held by the library can give more emphasis on how to use "ILL/Document supply", "Suggest an Item for the Collection" or "BONUS" to make a request for a collection.

Thank you very much.

Best Regards,

Response

Thankyou for your suggestion. Library staff will ensure information about these services is included in future PhD and other student training sessions.

Suggestion

Dear Sir or Madam,

my comment is less a sugestion rather than a complaint regarding the noise level in the law library. I understand that you try hard to make third level of the library a noise - free zone with all these "shushhh"

and "this is a silent study area" signs.

I tried - the last 10 days - to study on level three. Unfortunately this was not possible due to the level of noise coming from conversations and mobile phones. And this did not just come from students but also - and even worse - from library employees. These people are supposed to reduce the noise level to a minimum - instead they talk to each other and other students with an increasingly loud noise. They - and there was no exception - do not care about the silent study area. This makes it impossible to concentrate and study. They are supposed to enforce the silent study area - and not to ignore it.

Would you please make this a real study area by enforcing the signs you prepared but still ignore? Thanks!

Response

Dear Library user

The Library regrets the disturbance caused and Library staff will be reminded that the zoning applies to them as well.

Suggestion

please open copy centre at Footscray the same time as the library opens. All year it opens late or at different times and regularly the print kiosks do not work or the machines that read your card will not and you have to wait till it opens.I have classes at 9 am and the earlier I can print and bind my asignments the better, rather tahn several times a week no printers work. Most anoying is that once the copycentre opens the problems disapear so what ever they do it would be nice if it was done before the library opens. I am not the only student that waits for the copy centre to open the other day there were 6 of us.

Response

Dear Library user

Thankyou for using the Library Copy Services and for your feedback on the service.

You have listed a number of issues and it would be useful if you could discuss the issues (particularly relating to the card readers) in detail with Copy Centre staff (99192655).

The Footscray Park Campus Library Copy Centre is scheduled to open from 8.30am-1.00pm; 1.30pm-5.30pm Monday to Friday. Out of these times, other Library staff on duty at the main desk are available to assist you with routine copying or printing matters. Self-binding facilities are also available at all times when the library is open.

The Library acknowledges there are occasional unplanned system downtimes. The Library has recently upgraded printing systems software and it is anticipated that the printers will operate more reliably.

not much suggestion but I have a very annoying aspect with city flinder library is that all the staff there is very irresponsible, most of them don't care about what they're suppose should be doing but just want to finish their day off. I sometime found them racist, i often see them very kind to local country students and very poor quality of service to foreign country student. I hope the university can apply better libarian, that has equal contribution to students!

Suggestion

Hi, I had email courtesy of library to renew my books and one of them did not renew as it was on hold, I cannot return the book any earlier than 23/10 and it was due on 20/10. please do not charge me for it. it is out of my hand I suggest the library provide a system that shows students that a book is on hold prior to the due date so that I know I need to return it. I am a Phd student, part time and I do not come often to uni. Please consider my suggestion seriously as it is a big hassel.

Response

Dear student

The Library understands that it can sometimes be difficult for students, particularly those studying part-time or off-campus, to return items on a given due date. For this reason the Library allows a grace period of 7 days after the due date within which to return an item to the Library. If a book is received within this grace period an infringement will not normally be applied to the item.

Students can also stay aware of the status of their loans and holds by logging in regularly to their My Library record (via the 'Log in to My Library' link on the VU Library home page). Here students can clearly see when there is one or more holds outstanding after the due date of their item/s.

The Library can be contacted on 9919 4266 and our staff will gladly respond to any further queries or concerns you may have regarding this matter.

Suggestion

Would like to see the library at King Street open on Saturdays. There are many classes on this day, and those of us who want to study or use a computer are unable to do so. Some of us only come on a weekend, so are denied this service. We can't go to another campus, as our books are here. Do we need to set up a petition to be heard?

Response

Dear Library user

Thankyou for your interest in the City King Campus Library

Whilst we are aware that students would like the City King campus library to be open on Saturdays, unfortunately it is not possible at the moment due to the constraints of our staffing budget.

However, several other VU campus libraries are open on weekends, including City Queen and City Flinders, see: http://w2.vu.edu.au/library/libraryhours/

As well, you can place a hold on the books that you require and have them sent to one of these other campus libraries for you to collect.

If you have any further concerns, please speak with the City King campus librarian.

Suggestion

Can the computer booking system be made more flexible during non-peak times - i.e late nights, weekends and holidays? Computers are not in high demand during these periods and there are often the majority of PCs available, so it becomes merely an annoyance to be kicked off every 2-3 hours and forced to wait 5 minutes before recommencing work.

Response

The system is designed to ensure that there is a reasonably equal opportunity for students to utilise the computer facilities throughout the busiest periods of the day. Unfortunately, the system cannot be varied in terms of it's operating periods. Policies are either activated or not and we are unable to specify different policies for the weekends as opposed to the weekdays. The majority of PCs offer 2 hour sessions with the option to extend for an additional hour where there is no booking in place. While we understand some people like to work for longer periods, the 5 minute delay to the next login is in place encourage students to move around after their session. This is to ensure that during the busiest periods there is a good opportunity for everyone to access the pcs and also to encourage people to take a break from sitting at the screen.

what is the point of having an afterhours box at the flinders street library if it is not put out. I have visited this library for the last 3 weeks and it hasn't been out. Suggestion

I thought I would suggest that printing should be cheaper for those printing double sided or that the printer should automatically print double sided to try minimise paper wastage. Students would be notified of the changes and could choose to print single paged if required. Both the students and the library would win in this situation, however I think printing prices would have to be lowered in accordnace with paper saved :)

Response

Victoria University Library is conscious of environmental issues and uses recycled paper as well as provides double-sided printing (at a cheaper rate) in its printing and photocopying service.

You will find instructions on how to use the double-sided printing feature alongside all print kiosks.

Please contact Copy Services on 99192655 if you have nay further enquiries.

Dear Madam/Sir,

I filled out the survey but neglected to add something important regarding the noise levels at the Footscray Nicholson VUT... They are ridiculous. Suggestion

Computers are anti-left handed. Its fine to loop the cable over the computer to put the mouse on the other side. But quite a few of the computers in the library don't have mouse cables long enough to make it comfortable to use on the left handed side. If they were a bit longer it would be fantastic and not irksome to use. Otherwise your library is great.

Response

Thank you for your feedback regarding Library workstation setup. The Library recognises that the cable locks (used for cable safety requirements) on our older computers do prevent users from comfortably shifting the mouse from the right side to the left. We are currently undertaking a computer replacement program throughout our campuses, therefore these workstations will eventually be phased out. The new Acer PCs have a longer cable which allows for more movement. If an Acer PCs is not available at the time of your visit, please do consider borrowing a laptop from the Service Desk as an alternate (and more comfortable!) solution.

a growing concern that the liabrary is NOT USER FRIENDLY. All students young and old pay the same fees but still there is no such thing like equal opportunity in this Footscray NICOLSON liabrary. students talk loud anywhere, constant use of "f" word and the place does not seem close to be anywhwere like a place to do research or study or to achieve anything. i agree there is silent area but its not sound proof,no computers there, students talking loudly, laughing out loud can still be heard n distraction is caused. Actually its stress over another stress. i also understand that there is 3 discussion rooms available for discussion but still there is lots of unnecessary discussion going on and its sound pathetic. Can't avoid it cause its so loud. YES I HAVE SPOKEN TO THE LIABRARY STAFFS ABOUT IT AND SO MANY TIMES BUT THEY SAID THEY CANT DO MUCH BUT TO ASK THEN TO LOWER THIER VOICE CAUSE THE MANAEGEMENT WANTS IT TO BE A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE CAN TALK N DISCUSS, MORE LIKE A SOCIAL PLACE!!!!!!!!! WELL THEN MAKE THE CAFETERIA THE STUDY PLACE AND PUT SOME COMPUTERS THERE SO AT LEAST WE CAN GET SOMETHING OUT FOR THE FEES WE ARE PAYING. Its sad that we can study in the library espcially when you want to achieve so much.

Response

Dear Library user,

It is regrettable that other students' behaviour is disrupting your study.

A silent area is provided at Footscray Nicholson and is monitored by library staff.

You can also borrow a laptop to use in the silent area.

If the problem continues, please contact the Campus Librarian immediately to ensure steps are taken to maintain a suitable environment.

Suggestion

hi, can something be done about the loud talking and laughing, chatting on the face book for long time in the library because there may be so many students like me that need silence while doing the assignment and studing. Making groups near one computer and chatting while there is another person try to concentrate in their school work. Please note that there are so many student who do not have the time and luxury to study or use computer at home thus library is our only resource. In this economic downturn we cant afford to come to school everyday thinking we can do our work in school and get disadvantaged by some students who do not have respect for other students in the library.

Since our final exams are coming near i would really appreciate if there is more strict rules followed in the library so we can achieve our goals.

Response

The end of semester is a busy time for students and the Library acknowledges that students need different (quiet) spaces at this time, and most campus libraries endeavour to provide a variety of spaces for this.

If other students are not abiding by the space zoning (eg in silent study areas), please approach Campus Library staff directly to assist you in asserting the requirement for quiet in such areas.

Suggestion

The female toilets ar City Campus Library are appalling.  Having visited the library each weekend during semester, it is clearly obvious that these facilities are not cleaned on a regular basis.  For example, Sunday 24 May, 12 noon - all cubicles have sanitary disposal units.

Each unit is overflowing with used sanitary napkins and used tampons.

The same situation was there on the previous day, making it clear that the toilets were not cleaned. Equally, Lab 10.41 and the neighbouring lab are filthy.  The carpet is beyond appalling.  All others represent a clear disregard for the hygiene aspects of occupational health and safety, and I ask you to take immediate steps to ensure that such a situation does not continue.  Should it do so, formal complaints by many female students may be forthcoming as this current state of affairs is unacceptable.

Response

Thankyou for bringing the matter to our attention.

A service call has been made and the unit is expected to be replaced this week and the facility improved (if not already). Library staff @ City Flinders will monitor the facility, particularly at these peak times, to avoid the problem recurring, but please advise Library staff directly if you become aware of the problem again.

rooms 407 and 408 are always closed. I belive that they should remain open and that staff training should be moved to a different building other than the library so that students have the required room to study. (as the library is always full since level two has been closed for the upgrades) is this a possible sollution?

Response

Dear Library user,

I regret that you have been struggling to find study space, but I do appreciate your suggestion for making the two rooms in the Footscray Park Library - 407 and 408 - more accessible. Although the rooms 407/8 were booked for a class on Monday, they are now open for general student use and we anticipate that there should be very few closures for classes in the lead up to the exam period.

For the second semester our Campus Librarian will explore options to see whether information literacy classes can be conducted in a location outside the Library to ease the pressure on study space. We also hope to enable some space in Building D for general student access to further hope with the situation. I hope that these initiatives will help to improve your study experience.

Suggestion

The library is out of controll, we cannot do ANY homework with the ammount of noise and vibration going on in the builing! great time to renovate! our marks will show the real improvement.

AND

could the upgrade to the library have been done over the christmas break, insted of NOW during exam preporation times? This is ridiculous

Response

The Library acknowledges that the Footscray Park building works will cause inconvenience to Library users at times.

A key feature of the Footscray Park Learning Commons Project is the transformation of the current Library into a Learning Commons by reworking the tired interiors of the current Library to ensure a continuity of experience and design from the new Learning Commons building to the former Library spaces. Unfortunately, during this time, it is impossible to move the Library to another location away from the works.

When scheduling the works the Library has aimed to avoid disruption during the peak periods of semester, however building contingencies and the scale of the refurbishment has required some work to be completed during semester periods. At the moment, most heavy building works occur in the earlier parts of the day with some respite after 3.00pm in the afternoons. The current hammering works are expected to conclude around the end of the week.

If you have further concerns about the noise, please contact Library staff who can advise on quiet periods and locations or provide free earplugs.

Suggestion

Something needs to be done urgently. This has been going on for too long. The Footscray Nicholson library is operating like a fish market. Students talk loudly with mates and on mobile phones and many even use the F word with blatant disregard for other users of the library. There is totally no discipline at all in this library. It is so unlike all the libraries that I have been to: peaceful and silent where you can do some good work or reading. Pls act now otherwise we have to rename it " Footscray Nicholson Market".

Response

Dear student

If other students are talking loudly and creating a disturbance, please talk to the Campus Librarian in the first instance, as she is best placed to handle such a situation at the time.

As the Library moves towards the new learning space called the Learning Commons some reasonable level of noise is accommodated, except in the designated Silent Area (16 carrels) where no talking is permitted. This area in the Footscray Nicholson campus library is located behind the collection. The area is clearly identified and promoted during Library Orientations, and the Silent Study Zone banner is visible from the entrance and Information Desk.

As well, Footscray Nicholson campus library has three discussion rooms that can be reserved by small group of students (up to 8 students). The library staff encourage students to use discussion rooms to keep noise down. At present the current layout of the library doesn't allow to create more quiet study areas.

The internet download limit is not high enough, near the end of each month it slows down because students that actually study are not given enough download to achieve full results

Response

From the IT home page: http://intranet.vu.edu.au/its/IAMS/

Student Internet Quota
To ensure valuable computer resources are used in the fairest way for the entire Victoria University community, all students are allocated monthly internet quotas. The quota relates to the amount of information (megabytes or MB) downloaded from the internet in the student laboratories or via the wireless network on-campus. It does not relate to time spent on the internet. Internal traffic received from within the University (ie. Internal lecture notes, intranet, etc.) does not count towards this quota allocation (as it is free).

Allocation of Internet Quota
All students when enrolled are allocated an 200MB per month (calendar
month) quota. The quota amount was determined based on researching other University allocations and applying a more generous amount to Victoria University students. If all the quota is consumed before the end of the month, internet access will still be available, but at slower dial-up modem speed.

I ask you to be serious if you have a lack of computers in the library (which is well known) stop lending out a room full of 20 computers, to [those] with only a few ppl

Response

Library training rooms are often used by Library staff to deliver information skills instruction to VU staff and students (eg how to use VU libraries, find information in library catalogue, databases and websites etc). When the rooms are booked for such sessions they are closed to open access before a class and when the class is in progress. The rooms are otherwise open for student use.

During 2009, there will be significant changes to the physical spaces at the Footscray Park Campus Library as a result of the building works required for the creation of the Footscray Park Learning Commons. It is important to redevelop the existing floors of Building P in order to make over the tired interiors of the current Library and ensure a continuity of experience and design from the new Learning Commons building to the former Library spaces

To help make up for the loss of facilities on level 2, serials collections and 40 student computers have been moved from Level 2 to Level 4. To ensure that enough space remains for reflective study, a Quiet Study area has been relocated to the Level 3 glassed area adjacent to the Service desk.

For further information about the Footscray Park Project, see: http://w2.vu.edu.au/library/LearningCommons/journey/2010.htm

The Footscray Park Campus Library rooms P407 and P408 are also used by Library staff to deliver information skills instruction to students (eg how to use VU libraries, find information in library catalogue, databases and websites). The rooms are closed immediately before a class and when the class is in progress. Also, the rooms are not open in the evenings or on weekends because there is less demand for PCs at those times. The rooms are otherwise open for student use.

Please contact the Footscray Park Campus Librarian directly if you have any further concerns regarding that campus library.

Hi I have a fine that need to be paid which i have done so yesterday and till now i could not view my results. May i know how long i should wait??? I thought that i could view the results once payment is made. May i know what is holding on still? Thanks xxxxxx

Response

Hope you have now been able to view your results.

Once a fine has been paid, the Library undertakes to unblock access to your results as follows:

  • If you pay online, it is a 2-hr turnaround
  • If you pay in person (and present the receipt to the Library) the turnaround time is normally by 5pm the same working day (unless paid after 5pm then it will be 5pm the next working day)

The library staff often seem unfriendly and as though helping students is an imposition. It would be great to get some nice customer service at the desk - would make the library much more inviting.

Response

Thankyou for your feedback on your experience.

Overall most feedback on library staff is high praise - it is one of the things the Library does best/performs well performer (see Client Satisfaction Survey) - in terms of being friendly and helpful, treating students fairly, without discrimination and readily available to assist.

As this appears not to have been your experience I encourage you speak directly with the campus librarian at the specific campus.

Suggestion

End of last year there were a substantial number of broken chairs around the library, but several would accumulate at the window bench for laptop users near the managers office. These need to not only be replaced but we need chairs increased as the number of students increases. Last week/early this week I noticed there were no chairs there. If students have moved them, it is an indication of lack of seating elsewhere.

Also required are a couple of 2min, standing up only computers available for laptop users to have quick access to in order to print. It is not fair that library computer access is not readily available to us for printing purposes when this facility is not extended to our laptops. I think you would find this most beneficial to achieving student satisfaction, happy lecturers (as we'd be able to get to class on time instead of standing around waiting long periods of time just to access a computer to print on) and improve the flow in the library. This was suggested following a SW student forum last year, but I see has not been provided for.

I would appreciate your consideration on these frustrating matters; and I do appreciate the outstanding support offered by VU librarians. I sincerrely hope there continues to be Sunday afternoon access to librian assistance.

Response

Thankyou for raising your concern regarding sufficient chairs, in good working order, at the St Albans campus library.

An inventory of chairs will be undertaken to ensure there are no broken chairs in public spaces.

All PCs have an allocated chair as do individual study spaces. Bench workspaces have been allocated an appropriate number of chairs, but chairs are often moved between spaces as students study in various ways, as individuals, in pairs or in groups. However, to ensure a more orderly distribution, Library Staff and Student Assistants will, during the quieter evening shifts, aim to return chairs to their allocated spaces.

The Library is in the process of implementing an online PC Booking System which we anticipate will assist students in planning their PC/printing needs. There are currently a number of 30 minutes express PCs available, but based on your specific feedback the Access and Copy Services Librarian is investigating how to address your concerns and provide express printing only.

Printing from laptops via wireless is under consideration by the Library and IT services but it is not yet available because of technical issues.

The Library's popular extended access, including weekends, will continue in 2009.

Suggestion

St Albans Campus. Could there be a more logical layout of the silent study area and group work rooms?

Silence and group work do not co-exist on friendly terms and having to share areas in such close proximity is only an added stress to those wishing to utilise a 'silent' area.

It is not the fault of those working in small groups as it is understandable that they require discussion.

This student needs some quiet space to think while typing up a major assessment piece and doesn't think the small group next door deserves the blame.

PLAN B...ear muffs available?

Response

Thankyou for raising your concern re the effectiveness of the silent area (level one) and the campus Librarian is considering the options. Please feel free to contact her directly to discuss.

PS ear plugs are available from the Copy Centre :)

Suggestion

Could more effort be taken by the staff at St Albans to find books placed on hold by students from other campuses. Because I am an off campus student who is working full time wilst completeing my studys at VU. As on two ocassions now I have placed holds on books which have come up as listed as being "missing", to which I have then had to drive to the St Albans library, only to find them on the shelf were they are supposed to be (Which took all of 5 minutes to find). Because of the [snip] practices at this library, this takes up both my valuable time (as I am forced to take time off work) and money travelling to this campus. This also impacts negativly on my study because of the extra time that I am forced to be with out these books. This problem is only at St Albans as staff at other campus such as Sunbury or FTS do make an effort to find any "missing" books. This problem could be resolved by having the staff at St Albans have more than just one look for the requested b! ooks.

Response

If you are having difficulty in relation to requesting items that are missing, please contact Library staff in the first instance as they may be able to save you a time and effort.

The staff at St Albans take pride in their ability to satisfy Bonus, Inter-Library, and Inter-Campus requests. During August approximately 1500 Hold requests were processed successfully, with 85% of Hold requests found on the first search.

An item is declared "missing" only after every area of the library has been searched including shelves, trollies, re-shelving area, carrels, tables, and discussion rooms. If there is a copy of the item available at another campus your Hold will be transferred, therefore ensuring that you are not waiting unnecessarily.

The search procedures for "missing" items at St Albans are robust and the staff involved are dedicated to locating these items for clients. The staff actually go far beyond the requirements of the standard "search" procedure and as a consequence have a high success rate.

Library staff are also prepared to shelf-check for "missing" items as requested. All that is required is a phone-call, there is no need to waste time, money and effort. Library staff are more than willing to assist.

Suggestion

i suggest you reduce the cost of printing lecture notes or webct content, as i am spenging, with four subjects, upwards of $5 a week. although it may not sound a lot, with 12 week terms and then exams it gets rather expensive.

Response

While VU Library endeavours to keep printing and photocopying fees reasonable for our students, the fee reflects what it costs to provide the service, which includes recycled paper, up-to-date and regularly maintained equipment at each campus library, as well as new services. Its prices for photocopying and printing reasonably compare with other University libraries in Australia.

Staff: Frances O'Neil, Manager, Library Services
Date: 2 September 2008

Suggestion

If VU is following the trend towards Learning Commons, where social interaction is just as (or more important) than quiet individual learning, why are there not more silent areas at campus libraries? Footscray Nicholson Street is a prime example, shelves of books don't block noise or make an area silent.

Response

At Footscray Nicholson Campus Library there is a designated quiet “Silent Area" (16 carrels), where no talking is permitted. The area is located behind the collection. The Silent Area is clearly identified and promoted during Library Orientations. The Silent Study Zone banner is visible from the entrance and Information Desk.

There are no single/double individual study rooms in the library. There are two discussion rooms that can be reserved by small group of students (up to 8 students). At present the current layout of the library doesn’t allow to create more quiet study areas.

With LC developments at Footscray Nicholson Campus we will focus on developing more inviting spaces for individual study and group collaboration.

Suggestion

The library in the city flinders campus is very loud. It is very hard to concentrate on studies. Please do something about it. thank you

Response

Considering the layout of the City Flinders Learning Commons (Library) and the concept of zones, it is sometimes difficult to contain the noise levels. However, there are currently permanent "no noise" signs on the desks in the 'quiet study zone'.

They have also taken possession of a large, fold out poster on a stand which indicates to students that they need to be quiet within a certain area - a 2nd sign will be requested for the other end of the zone.

Campus Library staff also respond immediately to suggestions and complaints from students if there is too much noise.

NOTE: quiet study areas in City Flinders are available on level 11 and 9 and there are large A3 signs publicising this facility.

Not a really good example from your library staff. Particularly on 3.30pm on 19.08.08. I sit here studying, whilst the female staff member in black cardigan and glasses sits nearby watching you tube videos. According to V.U. filtering that is banned is it not?

Response

Thankyou for your feedback and the opportunity to clarify:

Access to YouTube is now available because of University-wide consensus around its educational applicability.

Also, for Library staff, new media technologies are an increasing part of our work and, in particular, we are currently embarking on a Web 2.0 technologies self-education program called "23 things" which includes YouTube.

Do those rovers do anything, all they do is sit there and laugh and listen to ipods. I hope they aren't being paid.

Response

Generally the second semester is a bit quieter, and Library staff have noticed that the service desks (including the rover desks) are not as busy because most students seem to be just getting on with their work and need less assistance at this stage of the year, and when they are not assisting or roving, the rovers are doing their (significant) reflective work, statistical or shift report tasks.

At the same time, we appreciate your feedback on how you perceive the rovers which we will consider in our ongoing review and adjustment of the service.

RE: CLEANING OF COMPUTER KEYBOARDS

Background: I have encountered several PC keyboards at Foots. Park campus that are very dirty and full of dust, food crumbs, grime. An example is in P421, from where I am submitting this suggestion. Results from Internet search of "dirty keyboards" show many tests around the world indicating PC keyboards "carrying bugs that could cause food poisoning". (Source: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7377002.stm; 18 May 2008, 13:19).

Requirement: VU Libraries to provide computers and keyboards that are clean and safe to use.

Reasons: OH&S requirement; clean and safe VU equipment (PC keyboards) for users.

Methods: (1) Regular cleaning of PCs and keyboards (especially the latter), say, once a month or a quarter; (2) Libraries to provide cleaning materials/equipment upon request.

I am making this suggestion without prior knowledge of the level of service provided by VU in this regard. Therefore, please ignore this suggestion if measures are already in place. Thank you.

Suggestion

I agree with an earlier comment about the lack of library hours and services for those undertaking summer and winter school options. I also am a Masters of Ed student who works and has a young family as well so appreciate the flexibility of attending classes on weekends and evenings. We who choose this option pay the same fees as those who study in usual day-mode but yet have severely reduced services - this is not fair. Not once of all the summer school classes (and no dount this will occur in winter school 2008 too) was the library open. What about having it open for some hours or at least twice during these semesters, what about occasionally having the library stay open after 5pm, as evening classes start at 5.30. VU should not be promoting flexibility and catering for mature age students etc if all that is just a marketing ploy - if necessary reduce some of the day-hours to provide even a small amount of service to those of us attending at other times or else signif! icantly cut our fees to compensate for the lower service. We are a group who tyoically can not take days off work so that we may catch the library open on a non study day nor should we have to. Ditto for student services and canteen services - nil provided for our classes.

Response

The Library has extended Library access in 2008, particularly in response to the needs of part-time students.

In particular Footscray Park, City Flinders & St Albans campus libraries will remain open on weekends during the mid-year break (which includes the winter session).

As well, extended access in swot-vac and exam weeks will be available at a number of campus libraries - check the Library website for details: http://w2.vu.edu.au/library/libraryhours/

Hope you find the increased Library access helpful.

Does the Library monitor what is entered into the catalogue search? I have often had the result returned as NO ENTRIES FOUND. (Not for specific searches but Keyword) If this occurs regularly on particular subjects it would be a way of determining what new materials are needed. I have filled out many library surveys commenting on the need for new and updated material. I have used Bonus with similar results.

Response

Thankyou for your feedback, and I especially note you have filled out many surveys as well.

Re: NO ENTRIES FOUND The Keyword search searches title, author, subject and note fields, and will return results from those areas in many cases.

If you are typing in long strings of words, this can reduce the results, so try using two, or at most three, words in the keyword search.

If you are still getting no results, please contact your campus librarian to discuss.

The Library investigated the provision of drinking fountains just last year, but found the cost of putting them in after the building has been established is prohibitive (requires water and associated plumbing, drainage etc). Why are we allowed access to Myspace but not Facebook? Im not the first person to point this out so why hasn't anything been done about it?

Currently access to Facebook is not enabled from Library PCs so that the Library could provide access to web-based email services such as yahoo, gmail while not exceeding its budget. Facebook is not yet widely used for teaching and learning and the Library will certainly be monitoring this situation and reviewing, from time to time, access to a range of services including Facebook.

Suggestion

I am a full time worker who is enrolled in a Master's program with Victoria University and one who will be studying over summer. The University prides itself on providing a flexible delivery of services to its students. Recent statistics have shown that Vic U has a significant number of students who are in employment. Thus the fact that your library has summer hours that are arranged to conform to normal office hours and displays absolutely no regard for working students or those studying in the summer semester makes an absolute mockery of the University's supposed flexibility and slogan 'A New School of Thought'. I would never have imagined when I enrolled that I would NOT be able to access the University Library until February 2008 unless I took a day off work. In this new era of user pays there appears little or no recourse to the consumer of a service to take any action against an organisation that so patently misrepresents itself as a knowledge provider.
DISGUSTED

Response

The Library has in 2007 reviewed access in the context of the needs of a large number of part-time students and requested additional funding in order to extend access. It was successful in obtaining funding for 2008 for peak times primarily exam periods and unfortunately insufficient funding to extend access at all times.

The Library’s website is available 24x7 and contains essential resources including an extensive collection of online journals, online books and online videos that can be accessed off-campus at your convenience. My suggestion/comment was going to be able the level of internet access on the university computers, ref. Footscray park. I see below the point that I was going to raise with the completely wrong answer! I constantly see students in the library accessing MySpace, why isn't it blocked? facebook is blocked. When someone said why is facebook blocked and not myspace you said sorry we are trying to get facebook unblocked!? I see students in the library for HOURS on myspace. A lot of complaints have also been about the level of noise - if you block MySpace then you will also eliminate most of this problem too. It was also suggested on the board that Myspace can be a ligitimate learning tool... if people need to communicate outside of the classroom, they have student emails. thats what they are for, they also have WebCT and its toold for communication that are underutilized. Not to mention the amount of gaming that occurs in there. This is a University, not a playground, if you wan! t to do these things, go home and do it, or go to an internet cafe. The IT system is all but a joke.

Response

Whilst the Library believes there is always some cross over between study and recreation, as the life and community within the University develops, it will continue to explore ways to ensure the approach taken to Internet access management facilitates learning within a context supporting our values of education, sustainability and responsibility. In particular, the Library is looking at options for ongoing selective access to sites in order to manage internet costs as well as access to PCs.

I’m a student at the Sunbury campus of Victoria University and I spend most of my time in the library because the resources are great and there are always computers and study rooms available. I have found that due to a complication at another campus those books can no longer be released to students. The books I have collected have been really interesting and have helped in the completion of some of my assignments. I have used those books, not only for reference reasons but to clarify my understanding of certain topics. I understand that the information in some of those books is outdated but it is handy to have that information as a comparison to the new information I get from other borrowed books. If someone does not do enough research and uses outdated information in assignments is simply not my fault. After all, if these books are being thrown away, I would rather have them, than put it to waste. I’m sure there are many other students that think the same. Thank you and I hope you consider my concern…

Suggestion

hi, i wanted to express how disapointed i was when i heard that the library would no longer be supplying non-current books for a gold coin donation. I have previously purchased these books and they have helped me immensely in my studies. I recognise that a lot of these books are quite dated and i take this into consideration when studying. I find that some older books have different explanations of things which helps me to understand a topic. In saying this i use current books as a main source of information so as not to use outdated information as a main reference. I would be really happy to see these books become available to students once again in the near future. Not only have i used these books as references for uni i have also found books that are of personal interest to me. I also know that i am not the only student who feels this way. regards, a sunbury campus student.

Suggestion

I love the free books I got from the library since I started uni. Just wondering what has happened this semester. There are no more free books in the library. I didn’t want to ask the staff at the library desk because they’ll think I’m cheap but I just like the books because they’re interesting to read. What I really want to know is, if we will be getting any more of those books. I’m happy to make a gold coin donation to help the uni as well…

Response

The Library's Collection Development Committee has reviewed the practice of placing, at the entrances to our Libraries for people to take, books that have been withdrawn from the collection.

While the Library acknowledges an appreciation of this practice by the people who took the material, it has decided that the practice should cease.

Withdrawn material will now be given to organisations that distribute this material to third world countries that are in need of resources, for example, the Asia Foundation's Books for Asia program which provides books, software and other educational materials throughout Asia.

The withdrawal of material on this basis will ensure that the resources are available to a wider community, and will achieve a greater benefit than the previous practice.

Hi, The Circulation Notice email service serves as a reminder to renew or return VU library books is great. Thank you. The only suggestion here is perhaps changing the title from Circulation Notice to 'VU Library Book(s) Due'

Response

Thank you for your suggestion. It is a valid suggestion, unfortunately we are unable to make this change as it is generated by the library management system over which we cannot control.

We will send this in as an enhancement to the vendors so that we are able to provide relevant titles to all notices that are sent to our end-users.

Suggestion

Although 12 extra computers have been placed in the upper level of the library I have noticed that there is still an insufficient number of computers for the students to use. Many students have to wait for a long time or miss out completely. Maybe the problem is lack of funding, if so we should find a way of raising more funds or ask the government for more financial support for Victoria University. If the problem is that some students dominate the computers while others use them rarely maybe we need to implement a time limit on each usage session for each student number. Thanks for your consideration of this issue.

Response

The Library is aware that there are times when all PCs are in use and is endeavouring to address this through a variety of tactics including more PCs, laptops, and longer hours of access.

The Library does provide a limited booking system in that some campus libraries make selected PCs bookable for the students who want to do so.

However, students seem divided on this - some like the fact that the PCs aren’t bookable, others don't.

Selected bookable PCs is a bit of a compromise

Suggestion

On many occasions I have needed to use the library computers but they were all being used, I noticed that many students were using the vu computers for personal use such as myspace and ebay. this is unfair to students who need the computer access for school related use.

Response

The Library acknowledges there are times when all PCs are in use and is endeavouring to address this through a variety of tactics (more PCs, selected bookings, laptops, longer hours of access).

At the same time, the Library has taken a positive decision to not block sites like MySpace or YouTube because for some students these are legitimate sites to access and these sites can be useful learning tools as social networking sites where people meet and interact, recognising that learning occurs not only in the classroom.

Why is it that the moment the semester ends and Swotvac begins, all the libraries immediately close on a weekend? Do you think we don't study on a weekend? This is continuously frustrating and a very poor service to students. Closure on Saturdays in particular seems rampant across all campuses.

Suggestion

I live approx an hour away from the Flinders Street library, I traveled in to pick up some books that I had on hold, to find the gate down and darkness within (therefore looking as if it was closed) and no sign alerting me to the contrary. I then subsequently had to travel the hour or so back home. This is not only frustrating but unacceptable!! A sign should be posted on the roller gates at the front of the Flinders Street campus notifying students of another door further up the street.

Response

Ensure you check the main entrance!

The grills into the Arcade facing Flinders St are down on the weekends but access to the VU building & the Learning Commons is available through the main Flinders St. entrance (a few steps further down Flinders St). This entrance is also fully sign-posted.

On Saturdays, access times to 300 Flinders Street varies during the year. However, Facilities have advised that the main doors are currently open on Saturdays from mid morning to at least 6.00pm (and later depending on classes).

In response to library opening hours -VU city flinders should be open Sundays. Part time students need week-end access to meet for group work and study. The computer lab is unsuitable for this. As a student I have often needed to go to Footscay campus, Melb Uni or Deakin to meet and access similar facilities. It makes the VU experience feel a little second rate. Congratulations on new library a great improvement. Regards

hello, i am currently studying in Paramedics at st albans and have found that this year the availability of computers on campus is worse than last year. i would like to know a few statistics on the amount of students at the campus this year as apposed to last, the amount of accessable computers (given that labs are closed for classes, eg: library lab) and how this compares to ratios for other campuses. From the health science perspective we have no lab but yet the paramedic course has seen extreme growth doubling in numbers each year for the last three years.

Response

Yes, the StAlbans Campus Library has been very busy this semester. The Library is endeavouring to provide more student computing access by way of laptops using wireless.

At the same time, StAlbans Campus Library is open Mon-Thu until 9pm and on Sunday from 1pm to 5pm and the PCs are more available at these times.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am very annoyed as to when I come into the Library to use the computers, I find that there are programs that are in another language and mask the English function help bubbles. I also find that in last semester, last year, that there were students playing web games and I really needed to use a computer. They are still doing so but i can get a pc now. These computers should be used for students doing their own homework or research. Also all web games need to be blocked and language programs to be removed. Thank you

We are just now in the process of refreshing the Library PCs. IT refresh the machines in the breaks and it happens at different times at different campuses.

If there's a particular problem, please discuss with the Campus Librarian.

Could someone explain why the VU library catalogue does not list items in accordance with expected items? I needed information on Islam, however the VU Library Catalogue responds as if I typed in terrorism? The whole page lists items on Osama Bin Laden. It is ridiculous… I found the University of Melbourne library catalogue more accurate-you type in “Islam” and you get books on Islam. Can someone explain this difference?

Response

The way the library catalogue sorts the list that is returned when you type in a search is by date of publication and then alphabetical relevance.
The list is generated based on the search parameters that you put into the catalogue. You might want to consider using other keywords with your search terms in the future to make you searches more relevant and meet your information needs.

Staff: Jane Miller, Electronic Information Systems and Services Librarian

Suggestion

The way the library web pages are set up to read books titles from the list of search results is more than annoying it is stupid and does not make any sense to have it set up like that. Who would think that the availability of a book is under the blue line and not in between them - someone needs to get their act together because it is affecting students research processes and ultimately affects the quality of information that goes into our work. This uni is going down the toilet.

Response

I am sorry that you are finding the pages a problem and if you would like to discuss it further, I am more that happy for you to contact me eis.support@vu.edu.au. We are constantly reviewing the way the site is being used and happy to hear all feedback. The new display of the search results is part of an effort to update the site and bring it on brand.

Suggestion

The library is a place where I usually come to concentrate on my work and study away from an often noisy household. However, it is very difficult to study when you got students from Asian and Indian background holding loud conversations in their language in matters which appear to have nothing to do with school work. Please help to ensure that library remains a peaceful area and not an international market.

Response

Most campus libraries have nominated quiet/mobile-phone free zones.

Check at the Campus Library service desk if you are unsure where the quiet area is, or ask to speak to the librarian in charge if behaviour is not being properly observed in such areas.

In other areas noisiness is accepted and the library as social meeting place is encouraged.

Suggestion

The library is quite good and efficient at providing the services. The books used more by students and the ones that are expensive to afford should be more in number, like mental health textbook be elder.

Response

Unfortunately, due to high demand at certain times in the semester, some items are heavily used, particularly if the item is on a reading list.

Although the Library holds multiple copies of reading list materials, students are normally expected to purchase their own copy.

As not all students wish to purchase textbooks on reading lists, this places heavy pressure on Library copies.

The Library has a facility where clients can request items on loan or from other campuses. It is recommended that you use this feature if all items are on loan. Once a request (hold) is placed on an item, the item must be returned at the due date else penalties apply.

Suggestion

I am a staff member in the library, I work nights and weekends. My observation over the years is that students find it very difficult to find the library on the weekend. They have to use the stairs near the main entrance and go around to the back near the cafeteria and up a ramp and into building E then use the lift or the stairs to get to building P level 3. We do not have any signs to direct them to the library and most people coming would not know what building we are in.

Especially people coming from other universities and non English speaking students.

Here are some suggestions for searching:

To do an advanced search for books in the area of Victoria government go to:
http://library.vu.edu.au/search/X
Enter search criteria such as: (law OR legislation) and (victoria) You can limit by campus, by internet available documents, by date and list by date or relevance. My list for this search of books from 2000 onwards came up with 331 titles.

There may be particular books and scanned articles for you particular subject on ereserve http://library.vu.edu.au/screens/r.html

There is an excellent guide to Law resources on the following page:
../../infolink/business/law1.htm
It includes sections on different jurisdictions within Australia, international material, case law, legislation, commentary on law-journals etc, and links to government web sites which in turn provide access to government publications.

Periodicals on Victoria law can be found in the law databases, including:
LexisNexis.AU, Hein ONline, AGIS and Austlii.

The online text: Author: Neuman, William L Title: Survey research Social research methods : qualitative and quantitative approaches ; Ch 10, 2003 pp: 263-307 Publisher Boston: Allyn and Bacon; 2003 is UNREADABLE! It is extremely annoying that you have to enter your student number and pin everytime you place a book on hold or access an online text in the same session. If there is the way around this its definitely not simple or clear. Students need a much better system of information on, and access to databases. I have suggested how this might be done, and it was explained to me how great it is. Its not! Its a dinosaur! Examples of better systems exist. The infoquest email query does not link to anywhere, there is no contact email for the library and requests for improvements are met with no change. Students deserve better! Library staff should demand better if they can't provide better. Most of this is an IT problem, for a university of technology, its a joke! This is not a joke, university systems should meet best practice just as university students are expected to.

Response

Thankyou for bringing this to our attention - the items will be removed. The lecturer has been asked to provide an alternative/improved copy. Also, if you log in to My Library, you only have to enter your details once instead of every time you place a book on hold or access an online text in the same session. When you use InfoQuest Ask a New Question, be sure to complete the required (ticked) fields.

Response

A thesis is normally unpublished material. A thesis can be cited as a reference in a bibliography. For listing a thesis in a bibliography, the details required, in order, are:

1. author 2. year of submission 3. title 4. name of degree 5. name of institution issuing degree 6. location of institution

example: Nelli, Adriana 2000, '1954, addio Trieste-- the Triestine community of Melbourne', PhD thesis, Victoria University, Melbourne.

Further to my query about Chinese and other character-based language software on the library's computers. I have a number of additional points in reply. If the software is expensive and, given that it would only be used by a small number of VU students, why not set up a small number of computers for the relevant students to use- it does not have to be on every computer. Do you have any timeframe for installing this software ? - it is already week 6, that is halfway through the semester.

As mentioned previously, the Library has not yet identified any suitable products - if you are using a product at home and provide the details to the Library, we will look into it.

Suggestion

I am a Chinese language student. Today, I urgently needed to print out an assignment in chinese characters that was typed up in one of the Computer labs. I was told by your IT people in the library that it was not possible as drivers that would allow printing in Chinese characters had not been installed. I find it incredible that not one computer in the library has not been set up to cater for the substantial number of students of foreign languages, taught by VU, that are based on characters and not English letters. Not only is it not possible to print but I dont think any of the computers are even set up with Chinese word processing packages. I think you are neglecting the needs of these students -I am sure that some very specific computing packages have been installed for other students- why this omission?

Response

The Library is aware of the need for such software as you are requesting, and is looking into it. At this stage the Library has not found a product that is suitable for loading on all students PCs and affordable.

Suggestion

I feel that the main library computer areas at Footscraypark and St Albans are getting out of control. They are turning into social meeting places where people mill about making excessive amounts of noise, talking on their mobile phones and genneraly causing a disturbance. It is very difficult to get work done when you have to endure the goings on of a particular individual's previous weekend. There is no apparent noise policy in any of the libraries. Perhaps it is time to implement one. Thankyou.

Response

I note your complaint and have advised the respective Campus Librarians of your complaint to manage any excessively noisy behaviour. In 2005, the Library implemented the Information Commons. The Information Commons space is intended to be a mix of the academic and social ie bit of a "social meeting place", and while it might not suit everybody it is the direction the University is heading and recognises the social component of learning. Accordingly, the Library has revised its approach to acceptable behaviour in the Information Commons, which have been nominated as busy zones and group work zones and include areas on StAlbans level 2 and Footcray Park level 3, and these may be the "main library computer areas" you refer to. Other floors and areas are nominated as quiet zones eg the PC room on StAlbans level 2 is both a quiet zone and mobile-phone free zone - if behaviours in these designated areas contravene expected behaviour, please report the matter to the Campus Librarian.
