| What is (Electronic) Reserve? |
-
Electronic Reserve allows electronic copies of lecture notes
and articles - the material traditionally placed on Closed and Open
Reserve - to be accessed via the Library Catalogue.
-
The Library can also place books, AV items and computer discs into the
restricted Reserve Collection at any campus - these items are then
only available as a restricted loan within the library.
-
The Library is also able to include URLs in E-Reserve. If you have a course web site on the staff
server or a faculty server - submit the URL
and the Library can include it on the catalogue as part of
E-Reserve. This will make it much easier for students to locate.
They simply need to type in their course code or the
lecturer/teachers name in as a Reserve search on the catalogue and
they will see a link through to the URL of your site.
-
The standard turnaround time for E-Reserve/Reserve
processing is 3 working days.

Format |
|
The electronic format selected for
Electronic Reserve is Adobe PDF. This is a well known format and the software required to
read it (Adobe Acrobat Reader) is freely available to download and use.
One of the key benefits of selecting PDF as a standard format is ease of use. The full
Adobe Acrobat software required to convert files to PDF costs under $80 and can be
purchased via Information Technology Acquisitions.
Once installed - Adobe Acrobat is integrated
seamlessly into MS Office applications and documents can simply be printed to Adobe
instead of a conventional printer, this will automatically generate a pdf file of the
Word, Excel or PowerPoint document.
It is also very easy to scan materials
directly into PDF when Adobe Acrobat is installed.

We can guarantee fast access to E-Reserve
articles downloaded on campus on the University network. We cannot guarantee the
speed of the different networks/internet service providers that clients use in
their home/office.
In order to provide efficient access to E-Reserve
articles across variable Internet connections, it is sometimes necessary for
E-Reserve staff to mount a scanned version of an article in multiple sections.
This is done to avoid having one very large file
mounted and allows the student to download 2 or more small sections. If any
network error occurs causing a problem during one of their downloads, only
one part of the article is lost and they don't have to begin the entire process
again.

Access
|
|
Electronic Reserve material can only
be accessed by enrolled Victoria University Library borrowers.
The Library Catalogue secures the material
and requires patrons to enter their barcode and PIN. This ensures that the material
is protected from general internet users.
Students and staff of Victoria University
can access Electronic Reserve material wherever they have access to a World Wide Web
browser (Mozilla) and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This makes the material accessible on campus, at home, work or wherever the student
requires it. |
