 Using a Thesaurus
Most specialist indexes have an online thesaurus. A thesaurus is a kind of dictionary or index, of subject headings or descriptors, that are used to describe the subject content of an article. Many thesauruses also include a scope note, or a short description, of the meaning of the descriptor as well.

It is a good idea to use the database thesaurus if there is one as it will identify preferred terms, and also increase both the accuracy and the specificity of your search.

Databases in the Health/Medicine subject grouping which have thesauruses are:

  • Medline (look for Browse MESH)
  • Cinahl with Full Text (look for Cinahl Headings)
