| Modifying Your
Search |
|
The search strategy process is a structured,
methodical approach to database searching to
facilitate the retrieval of appropriate results. An
effective search strategy may require lateral
thinking, the need to redefine your search strategy,
or to expand or refine your search terms.
If your search doesn't work as expected, here are
some suggestions you can try.
|
|
If
your search result was too small |
-
add
synonyms or related terms to broaden your
search terms
-
are you linking too many search terms. Every
time you link terms with
AND you are narrowing your search
-
check your spelling
-
use the
online thesaurus if there is one
|
|
If your search result was too large |
-
use more specific keywords, or add more search
terms to narrow the search
-
use limiting options, e.g. date ranges, or
search specific
fields of a record, e.g. subject headings or
descriptor fields. An online thesaurus is useful
for this.
