Locating Journals in an Electronic Database

Most databases do not have complete full text coverage. Indexes have no full text cover, although may link to other databases which do provide some full text.

Frequently you will encounter the need to check the VU library catalogue to locate a journal which contains an article which you have retrieved in your database search, and for which there is no full text available.

Some databases have an internal linking mechanism to the catalogue, which may look like this:

or they may have a WebBridge link that looks like this:

Other databases may not have an internal link, and you may need to link to the catalogue from the Library home page.

A catalogue entry like the example below, indicates that the Library holds the journal title in an electronic database

Note the citation details (author, article title, journal title, date, volume / issue, page numbers) for the article you wish to retrieve before you start.

To Link to the Journal
  1. Click on the hyperlink
  2. This link may either:

 

 Linking to a Table of Contents

  1. Click on the year you require
  2. Volume / issue numbers will display. Click on the required volume / issue.
  3. Articles from the issue will display. Click on the full text link of the required article.
Linking to a Database

  1. Click on the button or on the hyperlinked text.
  2. Follow any subsequent links to enter the database.
  3. Use advanced or guided search options where you can enter specific details, e.g. author's name, etc.
