LINKING
Linking saves you the trouble of downloading, saving and copying material.  Often you can also avoid the copyright issues copying may involve.  You may put links on WebCT.
LINKING TO AND STREAMING FROM WEBPAGES
Normally it is OK to make a link to a webpage*.  The Internet gives an implied licence to do so.

When looking at a link from VU to an external site, our students should not be given the impression that the linked site comes from Victoria University.    Make sure that when you click through to the linked site, the URL shown at the top of the page belongs to this external site, and is not an extension on a VU URL.

You may also stream live for your students in your class audiovisual material directly from the internet (including material from YouTube and TV podcasts) or make a link in WebCT to such material.  Where a site allows you to embed a link on WebCT, you may do so.

When making any link, include some information about the website such as the organisation's name.  (Avoid using trade marks or logos unless we have a licence or written permission to use them.)  Also remember to fully reference the material you are linking to next to the link (for example the title, author, date, source etc of any article or the title, director, date etc of an audiovisual piece).

Please do not link to material from sites containing pirated material.

* If you click a box agreeing to a website's terms and conditions, you must firstly check these terms and conditions to see if the linking you want is allowed (as they will then override the advice given above).  This may particularly apply if you are linking  to a page beyond the site's home page (ie deep linking).  If you are in doubt, simply link to the site's home page and give your students directions on where to find the document from there.  Another option is to get written permission from the website owner to create the link.  When doing so, make sure the website owner owns all the copyright in the work.

AVOID LINKING TO INFRINGING OR DEFAMATORY MATERIAL
Please don't link to infringing material on the Web such as sites that allow downloading commercial films for free.  This may be seen as authorising or promoting the infringement and is not permitted under the Copyright Act.  Similarly, avoid linking to defamatory material as you may be held liable in court for "publishing" the material.
