Services Available to Financial Alumni Members
Borrowing & Service Privileges
  • Unlimited loans (in person)
  • Maximum 10 holds
  • Normally 14 day loans, unless specified otherwise
  • Alumni patrons have access to selected electronic databases, where an authentication process is required.
  • Alumni patrons also have access to the electronic resources, where no authentication process is required
  • Users would not be able to book equipment or displace Victoria University students from using PCs.
Overdues / Infringements
  • You cannot borrow if you have overdues
  • Once an item becomes overdue, borrowing privileges are suspended until the item is returned

Access to Electronic Resources
  • Alumni patrons have access to selected electronic resources.
    These include:
    • Electronic resources where no authentication process is required.
    • Electronic Resources that specifically permit access by Alumni of Victoria University by special arrangement.
  • On visiting the Campus Library Locations, Alumni members are not able to book equipment or utilise equipment that requires network level authentication.
Electronic Resources Currently Available to Alumni Members

When logging onto online resources, ID Number = complete Alumni library barcode number.

  • EBSCOHost Research Databases (Alumni) - includes:
    • Academic Search Alumni Edition is designed for the research needs of the graduate professional. The database provides full text for more than 3,180 journals as well as indexing and abstracting for more than 8,000 journals. The database offers information in nearly every area of academic study including biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, psychology, religion & theology, and more. Academic Search Alumni Edition also includes valuable peer-reviewed full text journals, offering critical information from many sources.
    • Business Source Alumni Edition is designed for the research needs of the graduate professional. The database provides more than 1,530 full text business magazines and journals, of which 771 are peer-reviewed. This database includes publications in nearly every area of business including marketing, management, MIS, POM, accounting, finance, econometrics, economics and more. Business Source Alumni Edition includes full text sources ranging from general periodicals to trade publications and top management journals. Additional full text sources include country economic reports, industry reports, market research reports, company profiles and more.
    • MEDLINE provides authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and much more. Created by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE uses MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) indexing with tree, tree hierarchy, subheadings and explosion capabilities to search citations from over 4,800 current biomedical journals.
  • GreenFILE
    GreenFILE indexes scholarly and general interest titles, as well as government documents and reports. This resource offers a unique perspective on the positive and negative ways humans affect the environment. Drawing on the connection between the environment and disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology, GreenFILE serves as an informative resource for anyone concerned about the issues facing our planet. The database contains nearly 300,000 records, full text for selected titles and searchable cited references for more than 200 titles as well.
  • ERIC (Education Resources Information Center)
    ERIC, the Educational Resource Information Center, provides access to education literature and resources. The database provides access to information from journals included in the Current Index of Journals in Education and Resources in Education Index.
  • MEDLINE via PubMed
    PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, includes over 15 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's. These citations are from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources.
  • Project MUSE
    Project MUSEŽ offers nearly 250 quality journal titles from 40 scholarly publishers, and covers the fields of literature and criticism, history, the visual and performing arts, cultural studies, education, political science, gender studies, economics, and other related areas in the humanities and social sciences.
  • SourceOECD
    Statistical publications, reports and working papers produced by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development).

Joining the Alumni Community
For special access to the VU Library, alumni must become financial (paid) members of the VU Alumni Community. For more information about joining, please visit: www.vu.edu.au/alumni/membership.

Membership options include 1, 3 and 5 years. Fees are paid to Alumni Relations in the VU Development Office. No VU campus library will accept enrolments or fee payments.

Financial members then receive access to a range of member benefits including special access to the VU library. Current access rights are detailed above.

Alumni library access does not include access to BONUS+ or CAVAL or National Reciprocal borrowing schemes.

Access will also be available to selected electronic databases where authentication will be required using ID number or barcode and PIN.

Eligibility
Patrons are considered an alumnus of Victoria University if they have been either a graduate, student, teacher or administrative staff member of the following institutions:
  • Victoria University
  • Western Melbourne Institute of TAFE
  • Western Metropolitan College of TAFE
  • Western Institute
  • Footscray Institute of Technology
  • Gellibrand College of TAFE
  • Footscray College of TAFE
  • Newport College of TAFE
  • Flagstaff College of TAFE
  • Footscray Technical College
  • Footscray Technical School

Some of these amalgamations date back to the early 1920’s.

Joining the Victoria University Library
Joining Requirements
  • You need to be a financial (paid) member of the alumni community before you can access VU libraries
  • You must be able to display a barcoded Alumni membership card
  • Your Alumni card will be used as your Library card to enable you to borrow from VU Libraries
  • If you are currently enrolled as a student/staff you cannot enrol as an Alumni member. You must only have one record
  • The Application for Library Membership form can be found here.
  • You can apply for library membership using the online application form (you will become eligible to use your card and access e-resources within 24 business hours of application) or you can present yourself at  the Service Desk of any campus library with a valid Alumni card. (Please ensure your card has an Alumni ID number and a barcode as you will require this information to join the library).
Conditions of Borrowing
  • Alumni members are enrolled for 1, 3, or 5 years
  • No limit on the amount of items Alumni members can borrow
  • Holds are limited to 10 items
  • 3 renewals allowed
Appropriate Use

General Guidelines (Applicable to all electronic services):

Use of this service including the viewing, printing and downloading of individual articles is permitted for the purposes of private study, teaching and research. This does not include the systematic downloading, copying or printing of  significant portions of the licensed content (eg. entire issues of individual journals). Undertaking this type of activity constitutes a serious breach of both copyright and licence agreements and may result in legal action or termination of the University's access to this product. Use of this service for commercial gain is strictly prohibited.

The conditions described above are intended as general guidelines. Specific licence conditions may be outlined on the individual database or journal web site under a heading such as "Terms and Conditions", "Terms of Use", "Licence Agreement" or something similar. It is important that you read and observe these terms and conditions.
