VU LIBRARY CLIENT SURVEY 2008

Thanks to the 3663 people who took the time to complete the 2008 VU Library Client Survey!

We are pleased to report that VU library received our best ever score of 80% for overall customer satisfaction. We achieved performance improvements in 5 of the 6 categories. Our two standout results were as a result of recent improvements in opening hours and wireless coverage.

The winner of the 2008 VU Library Client Survey major prize of the 8GB Apple iPhone is Andrew, pictured below with Philip Kent, University Librarian.

Prize winners were selected randomly by the external agency that runs the survey for us. There is no link between good or bad comments and the prizes! Other prizes included 20 x $20 iTunes Gift cards and 20 x $10 Library Access cards. Prizes were won by 38 students and 3 staff from all VU campuses. Congratulations to the winners!

The Library will publish further details of the survey results and our actions planned in response shortly.

AND THE WINNERS ARE!

More than 100 entries were received in the competition which ran from March 14 until April 4 and we thank all our entrants for their participation. We are pleased to announce the following winners along with their respective success stories and wish them ‘happy shopping’ with their $50 Bookshop Vouchers!

Robert Robert (City Flinders Campus)
I wanted to borrow "Principles of managerial Finance" by Gitman, unfortunately, in VU Library, all the books were gone. I ordered from Melbourne Uni Library.

Melissa Cameron (Footscray Park Campus)
I had "Waltzing Matilda" sent from Newcastle so I could share it (as a picture book) with some young students on my teaching placement.

Rachel Manolis (Melton Campus)
I was able to get a book I needed from Ballarat Uni as it was not available at VU

Christine Laviolette (St Albans Campus)
I needed a book for a subject unit and all 10 VU copies were taken out. There wasn't a copy available on reserve, therefore the librarian ordered a BONUS copy from the University of Melbourne. I picked it up 3 days later!

Marlene Cran (Werribee Campus)
I found a book from Melbourne Uni library using BONUS, enabled me to complete a section of a paper quickly without the inconvenience of city travel

Jasmine Purches (Footscray Park Campus)
The service is fantastic. My Bonus took less then two days and I received an email letting me know my book had come in. You can’t get more convenient then that!

Name Withheld (Footscray Park Campus)
I placed a hold on one of my politics text books that was at Deakin as all the ones at VU were taken

Jenny Redwood (Footscray Park Campus)
We saw the film "There will be blood" and wished to review the original inspiration - Sinclair Upton's "Oil" - delivered to FP [Footscray Park] from Deakin Uni in 2 days!

Changes to Web Site access in the Library

From this week the Library has made a number of changes to the range of Web Sites accessible within each of the campus Libraries in an effort to maximise Internet access for clients. In past client feedback survey, clients have indicated a need for access to web based email services such as Hotmal or GMail. These are inaccessible in most areas of the University but the Library has decided to provide access to these services on a trial basis over the next 3 months. In order to offset the Internet traffic increase, games sites and personals or dating sites are now blocked from access within the Libraries.

This new policy will be reviewed during September in relation to quota use and computer accessibility.

Learning Commons Developments at Werribee & St Albans Underway

Learning Commons works are now underway at both Werribee and St Albans campuses. It is an exciting time for all of us. According to Brian Tyrrell, Information Resources Coordinator and Werribee Campus Librarian, "This partnership between the Library, Student Learning Services & Student Careers Services will facilitate and enhance student collaborative learning by creating synergies between the acquisition, organisation & dissemination of knowledge, technological resources, and collegial and educational support."

To create this new environment, building works are required at both campuses. Plans and updates are available at each campus library.

Library Quality Awards

Acknowledging and rewarding staff who are doing exemplary work is the main aim of the annual library awards.

Many nominations were received in 2006, which is a clear indication that library staff are doing a terrific job. The 2006 winners are:

  1. LIBRARY SERVICE AWARD - Footscray Park Library Staff for their contribution to the terrific Library Annual Customer Service Survey result. Victoria University Library is in the top 25% of academic libraries benchmarked by Ambit (34). In 2005, we were in the top 50%. Most of the respondents in the survey were Footscray Park students who obviously value the service by friendly, approachable and professional Footscray Park Staff.

  2. LIBRARY QUALITY AWARD - John Prentice who is tucked away in a quiet corner of St Albans campus library. He is the Library's Electronic Information Services (EIS) Officer. John has been with the library for many years in various guises however it is for his work in the EIS team that he has won the Victoria University Library Staff Quality Award for 2006.

He is an important part of the EIS team and often juggles many different projects. In 2006 he totally revamped the library's online database and forms for collecting statistics about library training offered each year. This data is invaluable for annual reports and keeping track of the high volume of classes offered each year by our liaison staff.

John did a tremendous job and his hard work, diligence and friendly demeanour is appreciated by all his colleagues.

  3. LIBRARY OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION AWARD - Jenny Comley for her excellent contribution and collaboration in the B. Ed program (HEB1010 Language, Technology & Education).

Jenny has been teaching and tutoring in this course for six years and has co-presented a paper on her work at Learning Matters. She has made a significant individual contribution to student learning and is always willing to share her expertise with her colleagues.

Jenny is the Campus Librarian at Melton and her work embedding information literacy into the curriculum of the course is a benchmark for other library staff working in this area. The Library will be encouraging her to apply for the 2007 Vice-Chancellor awards.

Nomination forms for staff awards are available on the Library Website. We would encourage you to nominate staff that you think do a great job for the 2007 awards. There are many library staff deserving of these awards and we want you to tell us who.

Headline: Internet Quotas
Date: 31 August 2005

Announcement

The University has introduced a new Internet Account Management system. Essentially it is a way of managing our Internet traffic. The IAMS has enabled us to introduce Internet quotas in order to control the high volumes of non-research/study related traffic. Each month students are allocated 80MB for Internet downloads. If the whole amount is used then access to the Internet is throttled or slowed down to the speed of dial-up access (56K). At the start of each month Internet accounts are topped back up to 80MB. For more information visit the IAMS website (http://iams.vu.edu.au
